IICL Exams Slated for September 2005
More Than 500 Inspectors Pass 2004 Exams


Briarcliff Manor, New York - IICL President Henry F. White, Jr. has announced that the next inspectors' examinations will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2005. The Container Inspector's Examination will be held at over 40 locations around the world, while the Chassis Inspector's Examination will be offered at locations across the U.S. and elsewhere if requested. Test candidates can register for the exams as well as purchase the necessary study publications online via IICL's website at www.iicl.org

Approximately sixty eight percent of the 725 candidates passed IICL's latest round of container testing in September 2004. Seventy two percent of the nearly 80 candidates representing Chile, China, Korea, Vietnam and the U.S. passed the Chassis exam.

The Container Inspector's Examination tests knowledge of IICL criteria in container inspection and repair, while the chassis exam focuses on IICL guidance for chassis inspections and maintenance. Candidates who pass the exam are awarded IICL certificates, photo-identification cards and will have their names listed in the IICL Online Inspection Directory.

Damage Measurement Tools Now Available!


Briarcliff Manor, New York- IICL President Henry F. White, Jr. is pleased to announce the availability of survey inspection tools. These tools, as prominently displayed in the Damage Measurement Guide, can be purchased through the IICL website www.iicl.org

The tools, which consist of a hammer, ruler and line gauge, can be purchased as a set or individually. The use of survey tools are an important part of an IICL approved survey and are used worldwide to assure proper measurement of damaged components.

Nearly 500 Register Early for IICL Examinations


Briarcliff Manor, New York - Nearly 500 people have signed up to date for the September 25, 2004 IICL Inspector's Examinations, reported IICL's President Henry F. White, Jr. With the deadline for regular registration approaching on August 13, 2004, IICL continues to receive applications and inquiries from candidates from around the world. In response to demand, IICL has added test centers in Varna, Bulgaria and Valparaiso, Chile among others.

"The record registration numbers this early in the season combined with the many requests for new testing locations continues to demonstrate that the IICL Examination Program fills an important need for training and expertise in the container and chassis industries," stated Mr. White.

This year, for the first time, the Chassis Inspector's Examination will be offered in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Shanghai, China; Santiago, Chile and Seoul, Korea at the request of candidates in those countries. The chassis test has previously been offered in the U.S. and Western Hemisphere countries only, as much of the information tested pertains to U.S. regulations on chassis.

Candidates may register for the examination at the regular registration rates of US$325 for the container test and US$225 for the chassis test until August 13th. A late registration period extends from August 14 to August 27, with a registration fee of $350 for the container exam and $250 for the chassis.

Candidates interested in registering may do so online via IICL's website www.iicl.org. Test Information Bulletins, sample questions and a list of test centers are also available at IICL's website.

IICL Announces Inspector Awards


Briarcliff Manor, New York - IICL President Henry F. White has announced the award winners of the 2003 Container and Chassis Inspector's Examinations. The awards are given to the candidate(s) achieving the highest score on the exams held the previous fall.

Wang Qian Song of China received the Container Award and the Chassis Award was presented to Mark Finiff of the United States. Among more than 700 container candidates worldwide, Mr. Wang achieved a near perfect score of 99% while Mr. Finiff outscored nearly 100 chassis candidates worldwide by achieving a top score of 97%.

Mr. Wang was previously certified as an IICL inspector in 1997 at which time he passed the examination "with honors". A 1996 graduate of the Zhejiang Fishery University, he is currently employed with Ningbo Victory Container Co., Ltd. located in Ningbo, China. He has been working in their technical department for over seven years. He has been married for one year and is anticipating the birth of his first child this year.

Mr. Finiff is currently the assistant manager at the Flexi-Van Leasing service center in Baltimore, Maryland. Employed with Flexi-Van since August 2000, he was originally hired as a mechanic and was promoted to assistant manager in 2002. Some of his current duties include gate writing, ordering parts and supervising the repair shop and mechanics. Previously, he worked at another Baltimore depot serving as a chassis and container mechanic for 10 years. Mr. Finiff graduated from high school in 1986 and also completed a degree in commercial arts at a technical school. He has been married for more than twelve years and is the father of a son and daughter.

IICL Announces 2004 Continuing Professional Education Course Schedule


Briarcliff Manor, New York- IICL President Henry F. White announced the 2004 IICL Continuing Professional Education Course schedule. Ten courses will be offered throughout the year, including two sessions of the popular Reefer Course and four sessions of the Chassis Inspection course. IICL is expanding its program with the introduction of an all-new Dry Van Inspection course. Four sessions will be held throughout the United States.

The Refrigerated container course consists of intensive instruction of reefer inspection and repair.
Qingdao, China - March 25-27
Miami, Florida - May 4-6

The Chassis Inspection course allows for a review of IICL chassis manuals and criteria in addition to presentations made by industry experts covering brake and tire issues.
New York - March 10
Miami - May 3
Chicago - September 15
Los Angeles - November 10

The Dry Van Inspection course will address inspection and repair as well as review damage criteria. In addition, students will become more familiar with the IICL measuring techniques.

IICL Publishes New Gray Areas Manual


BRIARCLIFF MANOR, NEW YORK- Today, IICL President Henry F. White announced the release of IICL's pocket-sized Supplement on Inspection & Repair: Gray Areas, 2nd edition. This manual was originally published in 1999 to address and clarify various areas of the IICL-5 (Guide for Container Equipment Inspection, 5th edition)

The second edition specifically addresses Section 3.4.1 and 3.4.4 (plywood floors- delamination, rolling shear, broken flooring and combination defects). The changes include updated text and revised explanations regarding delamination and rolling shear failure.

Plywood flooring and the issues concerning their inspection have become critical in having the industry understand the cause and effect of why they may fail. The revised text and detailed explanations are intended to give concerned parties a better understanding of these issues.
